Main Achievements of Punjab Govt. in Agriculture

Govt. has paid special attention for the development of agriculture because 75% population of Punjab is depending on agriculture. Similarly, in progress of economic field of Punjab, agriculture has played a great role.

Many important points are given below:

Connection of 2800 Tubewells have bee released.
1.66 Lac Nitrogen fertilizers were given.
Free power is given to Agriculture sector.
Use of Zypsum has been raised four times from last year.
Cooperative Societies have decreased rate of interest 2% for farmers.
Punjab Government has satisfied the needs of people. It has supplied 196.35 lac tonnes in1991-92. In 2000, this production touched a 238.17 lac tonnes.
The Government has spent Rs. 25 crores 75 lacs for the development of marketing system.
The Government has established 200 Godowns.
Where cotton production is high, covered shades have been made.
Irrigation facilities are being improved. With the help of World Bank in Sangrur/Bhatinda, etc. Distts 2500 k.m. canals are being made.
In recovery of loans leniency is being used.
Kucha canals are being cemented but no amount is charged from the farmers.

Kandi Canal Project: In Hoshiarpur District, the Punjab Government has started a scheme of Rs.320/- crores. From this project, near about 30 Hectare barren land will be made fertile. This canal will be 54 k.m. long. This scheme has been completed on 12/6/1993. Prime Minister had given financial assistance to this project.

Integrated rual Development: The Govt. has decided to run this scheme for the development of villages. For this projects Rs.302/- crores have been sanctioned. The then PM Shri Morarji Desai had inaugurated this scheme on 22/11/77 at Buttor village near Mukatsar. 12128 villages were covered under this scheme.

In every block, 5 villages were selected. Every selected village was made Focal Point. So every focal point was fully developed.

Aims of this Programme:

Local resources to be developed in order to develop rural areas.
Small scale and Cottage Industries to be developed which were based on agriculture.
Existing industries to be strengthened.
Special attention to be given for the development of agriculture. So, 5% increase in agriculture production may be achieved.
Full and profitable employment to be provided.

In the 9th Five-year Plan, near about 67% were spent on agriculture sector. So integrated rural development was forcefully implemented.

In the previous year, 11560 families were benefited in this scheme.

357 focal points benefited 868879 families in 1992-93 72963 families were given benefits in 94-95. This programme is fully implemented in letter and spirit.
