Internet Student Visa Applications in Australia

Who can apply?

If you are already in Australia and you want to stay on and study, you can now apply directly for a student visa over the Internet if you are in Assessment levels 1 or 2.

If you are already a student in Australia, you may also apply online for a further student visa.

If you are the spouse of a student in Australia, and are applying in Australia to remain with that student, you can lodge your application over the Internet.

Students who already have a student visa can now apply for a student visa with permission to work on the Internet.

What are the advantages of applying online?

Applying online means you have the convenience of applying from anywhere in Australia at a time suitable to you. You will avoid the need to visit a DIMIA office multiple times to pick up forms, lodge applications, make enquiries etc. There will be an online enquiry facility available to you, should you need it. The use of electronic communication rather than regular mail will also hasten overall processing times.

How long will it take for my application to be processed on-line?

DIMIA will contact you by email within 3 working days of the lodgement of your application to advise you of your next step. Should an interview be required you will be expected to bring all outstanding documentation to your interview. Applications will be assessed at interview, and where possible, a decision will be made.

What is an eCoE (electronic Confirmation of Enrolment)?

This is an official form issued by your Australian education provider showing that you have enrolled in a course and have paid enrolment fees. You must have a confirmation of enrolment for a course before you can be granted a visa to study in Australia. The confirmation of enrolment contains your course start and end dates as well as an official course registration code.

Can my family members apply on-line too?

You can include your family unit members in your application when applying over the internet.

In addition, if your spouse (aged at least 18 years) is in Australia and is seeking to join you, they may also apply for a student visa over the internet. They may include other family unit members in their application.

Family members can also apply for a student visa with permission to work. They can be either included in your application, or can make a separate application. There is no age restriction on applicants applying for permission to work.

A family unit member is your spouse, and any dependant children of you or your spouse, who are unmarried and aged less than 18 years.

Why am I having difficulty lodging over the Internet?

Although the on-line system is highly reliable, you may, in some instances, be instructed to contact your nearest State or Territory DIMIA Office. This may occur, for example, if you enter your details incorrectly, or if you are not eligible to apply.

If you are applying for an initial or further student visa, you are not eligible to apply if you are aged less than 18 years, do not hold an appropriate visa, do not hold an electronic confirmation of enrolment; do not hold a student visa and are in assessment levels 3 or 4, or are applying more than 6 weeks before your course commences.

If you are applying for a student visa with permission to work, you are not eligible to apply if you, or the student you are joining, holds a 560 or 562 student visa, does not hold an electronic confirmation of enrolment, or is applying before the course commences.

Is it safe to provide my credit card details on-line?

Yes, this function on the immigration website is secure and your credit card details will only be used for your student visa fee.
